Pastor to People:

My dear wife, Karen, pictured here with our grandson Paul, shares some help and hope for Mother’s Day 2015.

Mothering and grandmothering are wonderful, challenging adventures. Without the wisdom of God and support of others, accomplishing this stewardship would be impossible. Books (and their authors) offer one source for this wisdom, so I thought I would share some of my favorites. I wish I had room for them all!:

Grace Based Parenting by Tim Kimmel (Amazon: $11.73): We know that Christian living is all about grace. To rear spiritually mature children, we need to reflect the priorities of our Maker. Kimmel has years of ministry and parenting to back his words. On the same theme of grace in parenting, check out Give Them Grace: Dazzling Your Kids with Love of Jesus by Elyse Fitzpatrick (Amazon: $9.88).

10 Gifts of Wisdom by Sally Clarkson (Amazon: $10.76): Everything Clarkson writes inspires me. In this book, she offers priorities for parenting, organized around character qualities that make for genuine life success. Consider also reading the volume by her daughter, Sarah Clarkson: Read for the Heart: Whole Books for Whole-Hearted Families (Amazon: $15.30). In it she describes the books that her mother used during family read-alouds to illustrate principles of wise living.

Age of Opportunity by Paul David Tripp (Amazon: $13.05). Parenting does not end when a child turns twelve. Tripp’s book both attacks stereotypes and discusses the godly parenting of adolescents—from goal setting to practical strategies.

Parenting with Scripture: A Typical Guide for Teachable Moments  by Kara G. Durbin (Amazon: $12.80): This alphabetical volume provides topics, questions, and tips for spiritual explanation and discussion. Along the same lines, I suggest Bruce Ware’s Big Truths for Young Hearts (Amazon: $13.02), a book that explains theology using child-sized words and illustrations.

Moms in Prayer: Standing in the Gap for Your Children by Fern Nichols (Amazon: $11.68): Moms all over the world have discovered the power of prayer.  In groups and on our own, we do our best work when we intercede before the throne for those we love.
