Jesus Christ and Isaiah

Bulletin for:
Sunday, December 4, 2016
Order of worship:
Pastor to People:

Jesus said, “Go and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19).

If you are around me for any length of time, you will hear me speak (and write) about why Stone Hill exists. Why? In order to advance God’s mission of making dedicated followers of Jesus Christ in Princeton, the Northeast, and the entire world. I love that statement because:

  •  it is biblical,
  • it involves all of us in its action,
  • its success rests upon our powerful Savior.

During 2016, ministry leaders, volunteers, and staff have been pressing this mission down into the nitty-gritty of service. Here is just one example: back in January, I proposed that we pray, trust and work toward seeing 30 people make professions of faith in 2016. God has answered. As of late November, the number was 34! Wow!

I will share more specifics about mission-and-2016 next month. In the meantime, allow me to make the connection between mission and year-end giving. Simply put, in order for us to move our mission forward in 2017, we need to enter the new year fully resourced. “Fully resourced”: that’s not just a fancy way of saying, “let’s end the year in the black.” Instead it’s a way of saying, “God is calling us to advance his mission in Christ. And the mission is about many things: kids and worship and VBS and missions and students and staff and small groups and care and bagels in the Atrium  and…. So let’s band together in every way, including year-end generosity, and let’s do so out of shared faith in Christ.”

Here is a snapshot of our current financials based on our 2016 budget. It’s different from the snapshot of actual expenses which is usually printed in the bulletin. I share it because it presents the target for being fully resourced:

  • Gifts received year to date (11/30) = $1,322,701
  • Total budgeted income for 2016 = $1,846,077
  • Amount needed by year end to meet budget = $523,376

$523,376 is a lot of money. But God has helped us meet similar challenges in years past. And he has done so through all of us banding together. Your year-end tithes and offerings will provide the necessary resources for advancing mission locally and worldwide. Thank you for your prayerful consideration.
