Ephesians 1:7-12

Through the shed blood of Christ the Son, we have redemption from sin.

Discussion Questions:
  • Believers in Christ have redemption. This means that we once were trapped by our sin and our guilt but now we have been set free by Jesus Christ. It is Christ that has set us free and that we had nothing to do with securing our own freedom.
    • Do you sometimes think that you have to try harder to be a Christian? Or do you sometimes feel that you are not a Christian because you have failed to do something?
  • This freedom (redemption) was secured through the blood of Jesus Christ. Do you see that all the sacrifices made in the OT were pointing to Jesus’s sacrifice that provided us with redemption?
  • Redemption also refers to the ultimate redemption that we will have when our bodies will be completely renewed in heaven. Do you have a sense that your future has been fully secured through this redemption by the blood of Christ?
  • Verse 8 mentions that because of Christ we now have wisdom and insight to understand God’s plan for ourselves and the entire world. Do you actively and intentionally spend time examining God’s will (as revealed in God’s word) and trust God to help you understand His plan for the world?
  • God’s plan is to reunite all things under the authority of Christ verse 10.
    • Do you live today with the full assurance that God’s plan will be fulfilled?
    • What part of your future tends to cause you to doubt or forget that God’s plan will be fulfilled?
  • How mesmerized are you about these gospel realities? How excited are you about these spiritual blessings?
    • What would it take for you to hold these realities more consistently and comprehensively in your heart and mind?
Church notes:

Not in Me

No list of sins I have not done
No list of virtues I pursue
No list of those I am not like
Can earn myself a place with You
O God be merciful to me
I am a sinner through and through
My only hope of righteousness
Is not in me but only You

No humble dress, no fervent prayer
No lifted hands, no tearful song
No recitation of the truth
Can justify a single wrong
My righteousness is Jesus’ life
My debt was paid by Jesus’ death
My weary load was borne by Him
And He alone can give me rest

No separation from the world
No work I do, no gift I give
Can cleanse my conscience, cleanse my hands
I cannot cause my soul to live
But Jesus died and rose again
The pow’r of death is overthrown
My God is merciful to me
And merciful in Christ alone
My righteousness is Jesus’ life
My debt was paid by Jesus’ death
My weary load was borne by Him
And He alone can give me rest

O Lord, My Rock and My Redeemer

O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer
Greatest treasure of my longing soul
MY God, like You there is no other
True delight is found in You alone
Your grace, a well too deep to fathom
Your love exceeds the heavens’ reach
Your truth, a fount of perfect wisdom
My highest good and my unending need

O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer
Strong defender of my weary heart
My sword to fight the cruel deceiver
And my shield against his hateful darts
My song when enemies surround me
My hope when tides of sorrow rise
My joy when trials are abounding
Your faithfulness, my refuge in the night

O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer
Gracious Savior of my ruined life
My guilt and cross laid on Your shoulders
In my place you suffered, bled and died
You rose, the grave and death are conquered
You broke my bonds of sin and shame
O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer
May all my days bring glory to Your Name
