Ephesians 2:4-10

Saved by God's good grace, we have been given the power of new life.

Discussion Questions:
  • The text clearly says in verses 4 and 5 that God poured out His love for us ‘even when we were dead in trespasses’.  How do you react to a God who doesn’t wait for you to get your act together before He begins to rescue you from your sin?
  • Many people believe that the church is just for the ‘good’ people.  How does Ephesians 2:4-5 dispel that myth?
  • When you struggle with sin, temptation, trials, etc. do you have a hard time still believing that you are fundamentally alive with Christ, raised up with Christ and seated with Christ in the heavenly places?
  • What are the other ‘identities’ that you are tempted to live out of rather than Jesus? (politics, career, reputation, financial security, academic achievement, athletic success, musical success etc.)?
  • If you are a believer in Jesus Christ, then you are God’s workmanship.  God has prepared good works for you to do.  When you see another believer, responding well (doing good works) how can you encourage that other person?  How can you encourage yourself when you see that you are living more closely to the person that you already are in Jesus?

Church notes:

Be Thou My Vision

Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart;
Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art--
Thou my best thought by day or by night,
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.

Be thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word;
I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord;
Thou my great Father, I Thy true son;
Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one.

Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise,
Thou mine inheritance, now and always:
Thou and Thou only, first in my heart,
High King of heaven, my treasure Thou art.

High King of heaven, my victory won,
May I reach heaven's joys, O bright heav'n's Sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
Still be my vision, O Ruler of all.

Yet not I but through Christ in Me

What gift of grace is Jesus, my Redeemer
There is no more for heaven now to give
He is my joy, my righteousness, and freedom
My steadfast love, my deep and boundless peace
To this I hold: My hope is only Jesus
For my life is wholly bound to his
Oh, how strange and divine! I can sing: All is mine
Yet not I but through Christ in me

The night is dark but I am not forsaken
For by my side the Savior he will stay
I labor on in weakness and rejoicing
For in my need his power is displayed
To this I hold: My Shepherd will defend me
Through the deepest valley he will lead
Oh the night has been won and I shall overcome
Yet not I but through Christ in me

No fate I dread — I know I am forgiven
The future sure, the price it has been paid
For Jesus bled and suffered for my pardon
And he was raised to overthrow the grave
To this I hold: My sin has been defeated
Jesus now and ever is my plea
Oh, the chains are released! I can sing: I am free
Yet not I but through Christ in me

With every breath I love to follow Jesus
For he has said that he will bring me home
And day by day I know he will renew me
Until I stand with joy before the throne
To this I hold: My hope is only Jesus
All the glory evermore to him
When the race is complete still my lips shall repeat
Yet not I but through Christ in me

Overcome

Seated above, enthroned in the Father's love
Destined to die, poured out for all mankind
God's only Son, perfect and spotless One
He never sinned, but suffered as if He did

All authority, ev'ry victory is Yours (Repeat)

(Refrain) Savior, worthy of honor and glory
Worthy of all our praise, for You overcame
Jesus, awesome in power forever
Awesome and great is Your Name, for You overcame

Power in hand, speaking the Father's plan
You're sending us out, light in this broken land

All authority, ev'ry victory is Yours (Repeat) (Refrain)

(Bridge) We will overcome, by the blood of the Lamb
And the word of our testimony, everyone overcome (Repeat) (Refrain)
