Why Short Term Missions?

Short-term mission trips have been around for 2000 years or so. The Gospels tell of Jesus sending out the Twelve Apostles in pairs to surrounding villages. Here is Luke’s account in chapter 9:1-6:

And he called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases, and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal. And he said to them, “Take nothing for your journey, no staff, nor bag, nor bread, nor money; and do not have two tunics. And whatever house you enter, stay there, and from there depart. And wherever they do not receive you, when you leave that town shake off the dust from your feet as a testimony against them.” And they departed and went through the villages, preaching the gospel and healing everywhere.

So why, 2000 years later, do we still send people out on short-term missions? Every person who goes on one will probably give a different answer. Some may say they are exploring becoming a long-term missionary. Others may say they want to help people or share the gospel message. Some want to grow closer to God or go to see what one is like. 

The reason that Stone Hill sends teams out for short mission trips is because of the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19): “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations…” We work hand-in-hand with our Global Partners to help them in their ministries, to lighten their load, and to bring encouragement to those in the field for the long-term.
