James Week 3

In James 1:19, notice that James instructs his readers to be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger.  This appears to be an outline of the main body of James.

  • James 1:21-2:26 is “Quick to Hear”
  • James 3:1-18 is “Slow to Speak”
  • James 4:1-5:6 is “Slow to Anger”
  • The prologue of James is 1:1-18 and gives us the overall theme of enduring trials well so that we are free from the power of sin.
  • The epilogue is 5:7-20 and gives us a series of resources in dealing with trials.

James 1:19-27

  • What specific part of God’s Word do you struggle to obey?
  • The implanted word is able to save your soul (v. 21).
    • How regularly are you in God’s Word personally and with others in community?
  • When v. 24 describes someone as looking into a mirror and forgetting what he was like, it seems like this is referring to a believer not recognizing their new gospel identity in Christ.
    • Is your gospel identity in Christ something that is hard for you to keep in focus throughout the week? Why or why not?
  • Sometimes, a great way to deal with your own trials and suffering is to stop thinking about yourself and serve someone else (v. 27).
    • What do you think about that principle?
  • Would you consider memorizing parts of James so that you can be doer of the word? Here are some suggestions:
    • James 1:2-4 gives a succinct understanding of the way we should view our trials.
    • James 1:22-25 challenges us to obey God’s word but also let God’s reminds us of our gospel identity.

1 Peter 1:22-2:3

  • It was the word of God that brought the world into existence (Genesis 1) and that brought us new life.

Psalm 119:105-112

  • Psalm 119 is a great psalm that articulates the power of God’s Word.
  • We often underestimate the power of God’s Word in our lives.
  • Starting to obey more consistently will strengthen our faith – this is so important when we are facing trials.

Matthew 4:1-11

  • When Jesus is tempted by Satan, Jesus responds to the temptation with the word of God.
  • Is it easy or hard for you to recall God’s Word under pressure?

James 2:1-13
