Pastor Tracy Reads | Normandy ’44: D-Day And The Epic 77-Day Battle For France by James Holland

October 15, 2026 |

Dads just cannot get enough of World War II history (I am guilty as charged!)

This past summer, I had the privilege of touring Omaha and Utah beaches along the Normandy coast in France, site of the historic Allied invasion that began on June 6, 1944.

Why read another book on D-Day? Here are 5 key takeaways from James Holland’s Normandy ’44:

  1. A Tour Guide’s Recommendation: My tour guide in France was top-notch, and he was reading this exact book as part of his ongoing professional training.

  2. Beyond D-Day: Recounting the full 77 days gives a far complete overview of the immense challenges the Allies faced after landing on the beaches.

  3. A call to pray for peace: Reading about the devastating reality of war naturally drives us to pray for peace in our world today.

  4. Gratitude for sacrifice: The 77-day struggle involved incredible sacrifices that secured the freedoms we enjoy today. Repeatedly, my French guide thanked the Americans on our tour for their ancestors’ sacrifices in liberating France and Europe.

  5. Logistics win wars: Holland’s analysis shows that planning, supply chains, and superior Allied organization were the decisive factors over those two and a half grueling months.
