Small Books, Big Impact

Most people wish they devoted more time to reading, but finding time to read is difficult. And there is nothing worse than starting a long book and getting lost in the middle of it. (I am still on the same Russian novel I started in September which I am trying to finish by the upcoming book club.)
Here is a short list of short books that will help you grow in faith. By just devoting 10 minutes a day in these books you’ll encounter truths that will shape your life for years to come in less time than it takes to watch your favorite show on Netflix.
The Apostles’ Creed by Ben Myers. A brief and non-technical explanation of every statement in the Apostles’ Creed that will bring you joy as you see the goodness of God explained in every line of the creed. You’ll also learn some of the most important names in church history that paved the way for our faith today. You’ll recite the Apostles’ Creed with a renewed understanding after reading this book!
The Heidelberg Catechism. Purchase the book or FREE online. A fuller explanation of the Christian faith in a question and answer form from a Reformed perspective dating back to the 16th Century in Germany. The catechism is around 130 questions with short answers. In about five minutes per day you could read a catechism question/answer and one or two Scripture verses connected to the answer. The answers to many of the questions are some of the most moving statements summarizing the truths of the faith. A life changing investment of your time!
The Doctrine of Repentance by Thomas Watson. Purchase the book or FREE online. We come to know Jesus by faith and repentance from sin. This book is about the latter, but it will strengthen the former. This approachable Puritan writes in short, thought provoking sentences that teach us why repentance is beautiful, how it refines our character, and brings us closer to God. I read this as a 14 year old and still recall some of the short pithy quotes until this day.
Life Together by Dietrich Bonhoeffer. One of the best books written on how to go about the Christian life in community. The book covers the importance of community, how to be alone, how to be with other Christians, confession and communion. Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a German theologian, pastor, and anti-Nazi dissident known for his strong opposition to Hitler’s regime. A book worth reflecting on and putting into practice!
As always, read books with an eye for discerning the truth. But when you discover a truth, be sure to deepen its impact by praying over it for yourself and for others. What you learn in these books may be so exciting you will want to share it with others.
Happy reading!
