Pastor Tracy Reads | The Zorg: A Tale of Greed, Murder and the Abolition of Slavery by Siddharth Kara

This is necessary to read for so many varied reasons. First, through the retelling of the stories of two ships: The Zorg and The William, you gain a deeper understanding of the typical slave trade between Africa and the Caribbean. All the events take place at the end of the 18th century. This book gives fuller treatment of all the different people involved in the slave trade. It is quite pervasive in its scope. Second, the heinous activity of the Zorg’s leadership in the waning days of its voyage to Jamaica is important to understand. Third, the attempt to recover losses of the ‘human cargo’ through insurance claims is also important to understand and process. Fourth, I hope you can rejoice to see evangelical church members and pastors involved in the legal case that paved the way for abolition to take told in Great Britain. Overall, an especially important book to read and to think about God’s calling on your life to see injustice rolled back.
