The sub-title of the book is, A True Story of Love, Crime, and a Dangerous Obsession. So, why read this book? First, it is a true story. Second, it is a rollicking good tale of adventure. Third, for those that truly read this book, you can begin to explore your own obsessions and idolatries, even as you read about Stephane and Anne-Catherine and their stories of stealing art all over Europe for years.

I do not want to give away the entire plot of this actual narrative but here is a taste of the story. So, Stephane and Ann-Catherine begin to steal art all over Europe. They bring it back to their apartment that rests in the attic of Stephane’s mother’s apartment. They have extraordinarily little money, but over time their art collection, housed in this attic, is worth millions.

It is fascinating to read the thinking behind the theft. Theft is now redescribed as appropriate collecting. The need to acquire the art and the heart motives behind the thieves are especially important for us to explore for our own selves. The more I read, the more I thought about my own life and the redefinition I gave my pursuits. What are my idols and obsessions? How have I justified those activities?

While Stephane is the heart and soul of this criminality, there are other people who play roles in the narrative. Ann-Catherine, Stephane’s romantic partner, and Stephane’s mom play significant roles in the plot. Their reactions and responses to the story are also a fascinating bit of psychology as well.

It is a good yarn told very well by Michael Finkel. In the end, it will push you to ponder art, crime, motives, and your own propensity for idolatry.
