The God Who Makes Things Right: The Good News of Romans For Today

Will things ever be made right? If so, how? In the Apostle Paul’s most famous letter, he explains how the corruptive power of sin destroys our relationship with God, devastates our world, and fuels the breakdown in our society. We see this breakdown in our families, institutions, societal standards, environmental practices, workplace culture, and in many other places. But the good news is that in the person of Jesus Christ, God steps in and makes things right. And he gives us a vision for the future –not of despair, but of enduring hope.
Starting in January, we will begin a study of the first 8 chapters of Romans. The life-changing message in these chapters will show us how joining our lives to Jesus makes us empowered and equipped people to live rightly in a world where things go wrong.

John Stott, The Message of Romans (The Bible Speaks Today) Pastoral and devotional without being shallow. Stott is excellent for tracing Paul’s logic and applying Romans to Christian living.

Douglas J. Moo, The Epistle to the Romans (New International Commentary on the New Testament) A modern evangelical classic. Moo offers careful exegesis, balanced engagement with scholarship, and clarity on key theological issues such as justification, the law, and Israel.
Thomas R. Schreiner, Romans (Baker Exegetical Commentary on the New Testament) Text-driven and theologically precise, Schreiner is especially strong on Paul’s argument structure and major doctrinal themes.
Leon Morris, The Epistle to the Romans (Pillar New Testament Commentary)
Clear, reverent, and accessible, Morris keeps the focus on the gospel while addressing interpretive challenges.
REFORMATION AND CLASSIC COMMENTARIES ON ROMANS
Martin Luther, Lectures on Romans Foundational for the Protestant Reformation. Luther’s engagement with Romans shaped his understanding of justification by faith and continues to influence evangelical theology.
John Calvin, Commentary on the Epistle to the Romans Marked by clarity, restraint, and theological depth. Calvin’s Romans commentary remains a model of careful exposition grounded in the text.

Scot McKnight, B.J. Oropeza (eds.) Perspectives on Paul: Five Views There has been no shortage of ink spilled on how Christian traditions have understood Paul’s life and writings. This book gives you a thorough overview of the various ways Christians have interpreted Paul. A key theme throughout the first 8 chapters of Romans is the meaning and nature of human sin and its continued presence in the Christian life.
Brand, Osborne, Seifrid, & Wilder Perspectives on Our Struggle with Sin: Three Views of Romans 7 This book provides an in-depth study on these issues. Helpful for Romans 6-8.
